Haute Couture: 4 designers – 4 costumes – 4 teams of students
The Draiflessen Collection’s fashion collection includes creations by famous designers such as Madeleine Vionnet, Christian Dior, Madame Grès, and Cristóbal Balenciaga. All four were members of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture, the Parisian trade association that only admits fashion boutiques producing tailor-made creations based on models, elaborately handcrafted and made of luxurious materials. This presentation in the DAS Forum developed out of a cooperative project between the Draiflessen Collection and the Department of Textile Design in the School of Cultural Studies and Social Sciences at Osnabrück University. In collaboration with a pattern expert, a textile conservator, and a fashion historian, four teams of students will each analyze a dress or ensemble by Vionnet, Dior, Grès, or Balenciaga, paying particular attention to the pattern technique and situating it within the designer’s oeuvre.
