Mrs Tinne’s Wardrobe: A Liverpool Lady’s Clothes, 1910–1940

Start Date 17 November 2012
End Date 30 March 2014
Venue Walker Art Gallery
Location Liverpool, UK

‘Mrs Tinne’s Wardrobe’ is a must for fans of vintage gowns and stunning costume from the early 20th century.

This display from the Tinne collection featured 14 outfits, 10 of which had never been on public display before.

Whole wardrobes of clothes, as worn by one family over many years, are very rare. The Tinne collection of clothes, worn by a Liverpool doctor’s wife, Emily Tinne, and her children, is probably unique.

There are more than 700 items in the collection and Emily’s huge wardrobe provides an insight into a long-vanished part of Liverpool’s past, between about 1910 and 1940.

Highlights from the display included a chic velvet and diamanté evening dress, a velvet evening coat with a dramatic fur collar and a rare maternity dress from about 1920.
