This display takes inspiration from the pages of Nautical Chic, the new publication by fashion historian Amber Jane Butchart. Charting the influence of the enduring archetypes of the sea on the history of style, from the Officer, the Sailor and the Fisherman, to the Sportsman and the Pirate, that have had a wide reaching impact throughout the course of fashion to contemporary design today. 

The enduring sophistication of nautical style is celebrated by Butchart in this richly illustrated, thoroughly researched work; its exploration of the enduring appeal of this perennially popular trend sheds light on the myth, the reality and the romance of the high seas. The classic blue and white stripes – beloved by couture designer Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel – and the All-American look of the East Coast are present, alongside pirate’s shirts, officer jackets and bell-bottom trousers. This volume is the first of its kind and features the work of designers such as Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier and Tommy Hilfiger. 

Amber Jane Butchart is a fashion historian working across cultural heritage, broadcasting and academia. She is an Associate Lecturer at London College of Fashion, a former visiting Research Fellow at the University of the Arts London, and hosts a regular ‘In Conversation’ series at the Victoria and Albert Museum focusing on the costumed body in performance and fashion. Butchart has lectured at the Institute for Contemporary Arts, the British Museum, the Royal Academy, the Design Museum and the British Film Institute.
