Newman Collection
An American Choice: The Muriel Kallis Steinberg Newman Collection, an exhibition of outstanding twentieth-century and primitive art recently promised to the Metropolitan Museum by Mrs. Newman, will open May 21 in the Museum’s galleries for Twentieth Century Art. Publicly exhibited for the first time, Mrs. Newman’s collection is best known for its representation of the New York School, in particular the work of the years 1945-1955–the heroic decade of Abstract Expressionism. The exhibition will include some 70- paintings, drawings and sculptures as well as about 30 examples of primitive art. A group of: 25 costumes from Mrs. Newman’s extraordinary personal wardrobe as well as a selection of her jewelry will be on view in the Museum’s Costume Institute through August 30.
