Stylized Sculpture
In the last quarter of the twentieth century, Western centers of fashion were shaken by the advent of a new wave of Japanese designers. These groundbreaking artists—including Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garçons), and Yohji Yamamoto—introduced unexpected and sometimes shocking elements that brought into question the Western aesthetic that had dominated the world of fashion. This exhibition shows examples of these Japanese designers’ work with photo works by Hiroshi Sugimoto. It is the sculptural quality of these garments that first drew Mr. Sugimoto’s attention, prompting him to choose them as the subject of his photographic series, also entitled Stylized Sculpture.
